My choice of materials in fabricating "Pandemic" carry significant meaning. Copper, bronze, and scrap metal represent resilience and transformation.
Bronze has a long history in the art world. It has been used for centuries in classical and traditional sculptures. By using bronze, I paid homage to this rich artistic tradition while incorporating contemporary themes.
Bronze sculptures are often associated with value and craftsmanship. The labor-intensive process of casting bronze symbolize the dedication and effort required to address the challenges posed by the pandemic. Furthermore bronze has a distinctive, warm color and a unique patina that develops over time, giving the sculpture a timeless and visually appealing quality. Finally bronze represents strength, resilience, or the idea of preserving a moment in history for future generations.
In the case of the "Pandemic" sculpture the use of bronze, along with copper and scrap metal, contributes to the sculpture's symbolism and visual impact, helping to convey the gravity and significance of the pandemic as a historical event.
During the pandemic, copper surfaces gained attention for their potential to reduce the spread of viruses and bacteria. The inclusion of copper in the sculpture symbolizes the fight against the pandemic and the importance of hygiene.
Copper is an excellent conductor, this property symbolizes connectivity and the idea of staying connected even during times of physical distancing, a theme relevant to the pandemic. Throughout history, copper has been used for various purposes, from currency to art. Its historical significance adds depth to the sculpture's meaning and evoke a sense of timelessness.
Copper is associated with healing and has antimicrobial properties, which relate to the theme of overcoming the pandemic while bronze is highly durable and can withstand various weather conditions, This durability symbolize the enduring nature of the subject matter, in this case, the pandemic's impact on society and its lasting effects.
The key at the mouth of the vaccine bottle suggests liberation or freedom from the constraints symbolized by the handcuffs. Handcuffs in this context represent restriction and loss of freedom. the limitations and challenges faced by everyone during the pandemic, including isolation and stress. Also placing them on the COVID sculpture's hands symbolizes the restrictions and limitations that the pandemic imposed on people's lives, including lockdowns, social distancing, and quarantine measures. Handcuffs is also be a symbol of control and a reminder of the efforts made to control the spread of the virus. It could represent the various public health measures put in place to mitigate the pandemic's impact. Handcuffs on the sculpture's hands express frustration or a sense of helplessness felt by individuals and communities in the face of the pandemic.
Placing handcuffs on the hands of the COVID sculpture is to symbolize that the pandemic was "arrested" is a creative and metaphorical interpretation. In this context, it suggests that through the collective efforts of healthcare workers, scientists, and society as a whole, there was a successful containment or control of the pandemic. It conveys a sense of triumph over the virus and a hopeful message that, with time and effort, challenges like the pandemic can be overcome.
The symbolism and metaphor convey the ideas and emotions, and using handcuffs in this way is meant to adds a unique and memorable perspective to the representation of the pandemic within the sculpture. It is to invite viewers to consider the pandemic as a challenge that was confronted, managed, and ultimately brought under control.
The addition of a wrecking ball and chain attached to one of the legs of the Pandemic Art sculpture is meant to introduces a powerful and thought-provoking symbol. The wrecking ball represents a force of destruction, typically used to demolish structures. In this context, it symbolizes the devastating impact of the pandemic on various aspects of society, from public health to the economy.
The chain attached to the leg can signify restraint or confinement. It symbolizes the restrictions, lockdowns, and limitations placed on individuals and communities during the pandemic.
The chain also represents the burdens and challenges that individuals and society had to bear as a result of the pandemic. It suggests that the weight of the crisis was carried collectively.
Despite the destructive force and constraints represented by the wrecking ball and chain, the fact that the sculpture stands implies resilience and the ability to overcome adversity.
