Design Time: The whole design idea on paper took 2 hours. I initially thought the design was a draft, but the more I looked at it, the more I thought it was finished.
Fabrication Time: It took a crew of 10 men sometimes working 12 hours a day for 52 weeks to put the final finishing touch to “Pandemic” 10 Men Hours- 20,800 Hours
Size: Making Pandemic 8.5 by 5 feet with the weight of about 800 pounds is intentional, the statue needs to be enormous and overwhelming in appearance and that is to mimic the effects of COVID on humanity which is overwhelming. A lightweight 3 feet figurine might have been cute, but wouldn’t have been effective.
Mask: The mask is made up of over 1500 nuts welded together to make a mask (muzzle) that measures 4.5 by 4 feet mask that weighs about 150 pounds. "Pandemic has over 50,000 welded joints
Syringe: The giant syringe is not just a representation, it actually has the syringe pump functionality.
Gold vs Bronze: Initially we had thought of using gold for the essential workers, then I thought that would have been too flashy for the moment and nothing flashy about the pandemic. Then we decided to use another valuable metal which is Bronze because the jobs of the essential workers are valuable.
Copper vs Bronze: Initially we had wanted to use copper for certain ethnic groups and bronze for others. Artistically it might have been beautiful but I decided that we are all equally fighting this war together and COVID knows know color; so there is no need to differentiate the different ethnic groups by using multiple media. So bronze won.
Handcuffs: Initially I thought adding the handcuffs would make light of the pandemic, I decided to add the handcuffs because of the double meaning. Pandemic being arrested with the vaccines and also a criminal couldn’t be arrested without handcuffs.
Production Cost: $750,000
The Map base: The dimension of the map base was increased 3 times 24, 36, and the final dimension is 48 inches.
Access door: Pandemic has a hidden access door for future internal maintenance should that be necessary in the future.
Size of the box: The shipping box measures 8.6x5.5x5.5 ft and made out of real Mahogany wood.
